Road Trip: Lakewood Goodwill

This post marks our 1 year anniversary here at Goodwill Hoarding! Thanks for reading! The past year has been full of adventure and great discoveries.

This Road Trip started with a trip down memory lane.

Ten years ago my husband and I got married. Beginning the rest of our lives together meant starting out with sacrifices. We moved out of Seattle down to a suburb of Tacoma called Lakewood (about an hour Southwest-ish of Seattle) where he would attend school and we’d save money on rent. From liberal-organic-granola-bike wielding-fitness enthused-single-Seattle to mullet- flannel wearing-republican-conservative-child-rearing-Lakewood, my life drastically changed. Soon the newness wore off and we grew accustomed to the small suburb town life and made new friends.

Initially, one thing saved me from loneliness; the Lakewood Goodwill opened the year we moved in. I attended the grand opening and spent many days searching through the cluttered racks of that store. It served as a little piece of home just a few miles away. Those days I obsessed over sewing projects and homemaking. I searched for good fabric and cheap clothing; anything to save a buck.

Not a lot has changed since then…. I still love to search through the shelves of Goodwill. My priorities have changed and my tacticts are more refined, but that’s how life goes. Right?

First visit back to Lakewood Goodwill: Road Trip stop #1

I haven’t set foot in Lakewood since we moved back to Seattle 8 years ago. Today’s the day! Make sure that when en-route to Lakewood Goodwill you understand your directions. The location sits quite a few miles off the freeway and the location proved somewhat confusing for me even though I am familiar with the area.

First things first… Bathroom! After an hour drive sipping on coffee, I was slightly desperate. Walked all the way to the back of the store to find I had to get a key from the front. Walked all the way to the front and then found out I had to walk back to wait for an employee to let me in. Thank god most Goodwills have bathrooms.

Housewares

The housewares section boasted the best Pyrex finds of the day. A Butterfly Gold baking dish $7 and a piece of Copper Filigree Pyrex dinnerware $2. The square baking dishes are actually pretty hard to find. So I was enthused with this purchase.

Overall I enjoyed this location. Well stocked and bright in a newish building. The bathrooms could use a re-model (or deep cleaning)… but that is really my only gripe.

Of course, while traveling to unknown places, I have to cram everything into one day. So I had arranged a Pyrex trade in the parking lot that morning. After waiting in my car for a few minutes, my date arrived. A beautiful tall blond with a German accent. She was so lovely! I had never met her before but she greeted me with a hug and a huge smile and as we exchanged our Pyrex trades she inquired after my finds for the morning. I showed her the Butterfly Gold Baking dish. Her eyes lit up obviously in love. I gifted it to her knowing that it would have a happy home. It seemed the right thing to do and she was so happy that it was definitely the right thing to do! (I hoped secretly that my Pyrex Karma would be boosted.)

My road trip continues and I visit 4 more stores in the South Puget Sound! Stay tuned…..

Sillisculpts

When the end of summer comes I feel a little sad knowing that the next 6 months of my life are going to be spent in the cold, damp, dark world of Seattle. But a few things brighten the horizon, one being The Washington State Fair held in Puyallup every year. I love walking around looking at the animals, eating scones. I really enjoy the hobby hall too. The things people collect amaze me. I dream of submitting a Pyrex collection one year….

Remember these?

Remember these?

This year, however, the Hobby Hall was destined to finally reveal the identity of my obsession. While my comrades were peering at the collections of Strawberry Shortcake, Star Wars, Gumby, CD Roms, and Assassin’s Creed memorabilia, I was staring at the answer of what has been a year long question: “What ARE these things?!”

Why yes... yes I do!

Why yes… yes I do!

Sillisculpts:

Those weird statues with googley eyes and funny/strange/endearing sayings on the bottom.

Sillisculpts

Sillisculpts

I remember when I first posted a question about them there was speculation from my readers of them being from the 70s. Nice work; you all are so smart (or is it that they are just so ugly that they could only be from the 70’s?…..)! They first appeared in 1968 made by Russ Berrie of R&W Berrie, a company that manufactured trinkets and collectables for gift shops and mom n pop dime stores.

And then it all came together. A greeting card is fleeting. It can be thrown away and forgotten, but an ugly statue with googley eyes lasts forever. This is the meaning of their existence. It all makes perfect sense now! Well… sort of. It still doesn’t quite explain a few of the really weird ones. I mean….. who would want a “sex relieves tension” greeting statue? I honestly can’t think of a scenario where I would be flattered to receive it (If a guy gave me that there would be a lot MORE tension in the room and no relief in sight). Where would you put it? In the bathroom? On your night stand?

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Of course, as with all collectables the rare or different are more desirable. So I guess if you want to actually collect these, the colored ones or large ones are more “valuable.” Also, different manufacturers copied these after they became popular. The original Sillisculpts are made out of a plastic/resin material that resembles ivory, filled with sand so they are heavy, have felt on the bottom, and are marked with the year, company name, and ID #.

The Devil

The Devil

After all this, I have to admit that I don’t hate them so much anymore. They’re actually kind of endearing. Still, I can’t imagine having a collection of them staring back at me from a shelf. But hey, to each his own… right? Some of them are pretty hilarious.   Do you have memories of these? Leave a reply and tell us about your Sillisculpts! Like us on Facebook and post your pictures of Sillisculps for us to see. We will always keep an eye out for them too. Grand Opening: blue Boutique, Olympia

A Goodwill Boutique

The new Olympia, Washington store opens today September 5th at 10am. Customers and neighbors will find themselves surrounded by high end second hand items beautifully merchandised and priced to sell. Did I mention free cupcakes? YES! First 50 customers courtesy of Bonjour Cupcakes in Olympia. And, don’t forget to enter the drawing to win a $250 gift card.

Personally, I never knew Olympia had such a cute little downtown core. The tree lined streets are full of activity: small coffee shops, antique stores, hip bars, and of course the new blue Boutique! Just make sure when you type in the address to your GPS that you specify Capital Way SOUTH (not north.. woops).

To the average thrift store shopper that enjoys the hunt and the fantastic deal, this store may not quench the treasure hunting thirst. But to the novice thriftier who doesn’t like to get their hands dirty, this is the place for you. Yes, it’s priced a little higher than a normal Goodwill but consider it a convenience fee. Clean and bright, organized and perfectly merchandised, this store feels like you are in a cozy well stocked boutique (’cause you are!). All they are missing is the smelly soaps, lotions, and hand made greeting cards.

Store Manager Candra Hooker and her team take pride in their work. The merchandising is flawless! Well coordinated outfits around the store inspire creativity. There is something for everyone. When you walk in the carefully selected, like-new housewares are displayed on clean and gorgeous shelving.

A Seahawks Jersey (Thomas #29) new with tag at less than half the price it would be new, white great condition Ecco slip-ons, heavy flannel coat, and manly collectables. All a guy needs is a cigar and he’s set (there’s already a flask….)!

Why buy your kid brand new clothes when they’ll just out grow them in a month or two? Goodwill is the perfect place to shop for your kid. The back of the store has racks of clothing from newborn to toddler and above. At least half of the merchandise I saw was new with tag.

The woman’s section in the middle of the store leaves nothing to be desired. The color coordinated Jewelry Case begs to be stared at.

Everyday the store receives new shipments from the distribution center of the crème de la crème Goodwill donations. You can also bring (small) donations to this store. The storage in the back is very minimal but they will gladly accept your gently used items. Of course the proceeds from this store go to support all the community services Tacoma Goodwill provides. So you know that the $15 you pay for that new pair of jeans will go to help someone get their GED or to someone learning the food service ropes at Tacoma Goodwill’s Neighborhood Bistro.

Things to Remember:

  1. Bring quarters for parking; $1 will buy you about an hour. Almost all the streets are metered 3 hour limit. I had no problem finding a spot on a busy Wednesday afternoon.
  2. Today an umbrella is a good idea (and tomorrow for that matter). You will probably have to walk a few blocks through a bustling cute neighborhood.
  3. Located on Capital Way SOUTH between 5th and Legion (click here for Google map)
  4. Hours: Mon-Sat 10-7 Sunday 11-4
  5. Hit the Olympia Goodwill store afterwards! Just a few minutes away….

Follow us here at Goodwill Hoarding and check out our WA Goodwill Guide to get info and specifics on Goodwill stores around Washington State. If we haven’t been yet, we will be to a Goodwill near you soon! Stay posted for upcoming  tales from the road after visiting Lakewood, Olympia, Shelton, Lacey, and South Lacey Goodwill Stores. Like us on Facebook and see where we will be going next and our finds around town!

And Then There’s These….

Whenever I’m at a thrifty spot I run into these ugly awful statues. It always makes me wonder… who bought these and who gifted them and who collected them. They are ugly, and crude, and…. beige. They would make a great “white elephant” gift this Christmas.
Here’s my photo collection so far.

What do you think? Aren’t they kinda great?

I bet they made a lot of mothers disappointed over the years… and fathers too for that matter. If I got one of these for my birthday I would be seriously underwhelmed. I kinda like he idea of giving one of the raunchy ones to a special friend though…..

Snowflakes and Kitty-Cats

Thanks to Facebook and social networking magic I have become connected to a handful of fun and sweet Pyrex collectors in the Seattle area. Two of which live near the Burien Goodwill and frequent it. Last week I met a beautiful woman there (who has a much more extensive collection than I) for an orchestrated Pyrex purchase. She had contacted me a week prior to ask if I might be interested in purchasing a few pieces from her. After cleaning out some of her extras , the proceeds from her sale would support her participation in the SummeRun for Ovarian Cancer Research. It was a win win! Help a new friend raise money for cancer research AND get Pyrex in the process! I picked up a black snowflake divided dish, opal (white) with turquoise snowflake 043 casserole, and an Early American refrigerator dish.

Pyrex Score

Pyrex Score

The other pieces in this picture were picked up that same day on a mini-thrifting trip to Ballard Goodwill (EA 472, Lime 024, Primary Blue 401).

Today’s adventure took me back to the Burien Goodwill aka old faithful. This beauty I found buried in the glass aisle with the small snowflakes peeping out; Pyrex rarely shows up on the shelves with the lid still in tact. This Pyrex Snowflake Space Saver is an opal (white) with Turquoise. One of the more desirable, rare, and old pieces. $9.99 was a little pricy for Goodwill but I would have paid well over that anywhere else (the lid is worth $10 alone). Thank you Pyrex Gods! My Pyrex Karma must have been all used up afterward, cause that’s the only piece I found all day. I can live with that!

Burien’s Knick Knack aisle acts as an orphanage for fun little strangely adorable figurines. They stare at you as you pass by begging for a loving home on your shelf; sadly there isn’t enough room in my house for them all.

Someone turned in their Hippopotamus collection. I found at least 20 Hippos dispersed throughout the shelves. Can you imagine the home they came from? I’m thinking a mid century house with heavy beige drapes, shag carpet, and a floral couch.

Hippos

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this Kitty Cat Nativity Set.

Cats in the Wild

Cats in the Wild

I had to buy it. HAD TO! It will be the talk of my Christmas party next year (the three wise cats kill me). I spent at least 10 minutes searching for the sheep cat to go along with the shepherd but didn’t find one. A cat-sheep would have blown my mind.

Of course throughout the course of my trip I was texting Corynn pictures and bragging about my finds. I wanted to continue the trip and visit some other locations, but I couldn’t wait to get home and send my new Pyrex friend a photo of my Snowflake Space Saver! It will look so pretty next to the two other snowflake dishes I got from her!

Collecting is more than just the stuff; it can mean new connections with lovely people if you are open to it. Not only did I meet a neighbor, but also a cancer survivor, gracious mother, and new friend. I will always think of her hen I see and use my black snowflake divided dish. In fact… maybe I will use it for our Pyrex Picnic next weekend. Yup that’s right! All us Seattle Pyrex collectors are going to have a picnic. We’ll all bring our favorite dishes in our favorite dishes. Can’t wait! You can expect a post about that for sure!

Thrifting Trials and Tribulations

Last week’s thrifting adventures ended up less than successful. Return trips to both the South Everett and Downtown Everett Goodwills turned up a big fat NADA. Some good stuff tempted me. I decided to leave them on the shelves for some other deserving customer. I took some pictures for memories:

Too expensive!

Ouch

My depression began with this super awesome Ivy Cinderella bowl which belongs to a chip and dip set. $12.99. Someone looking to complete their set will be very happy to find this.

The tears welled up at the sight of this abused Amish Butterprint Cinderella bowl which I desperately need to complete my set. But it was too far gone.

While these great blue and gold-rimmed Pyrex tea cups are pretty, they are actually not worth a whole lot.

Super cute and heavy; someone will enjoy this entire 10 piece set of Pink scalloped rim dishes.

It’s not all bad news! Corynn and I did end up enjoying a day trip to the West Seattle Antique mall. Of course, no surprise to us, we left empty-handed. We can’t justify spending $20 on something we will find in a few weeks for $5 at Goodwill.

Moral of the story? There’s nothing like a trip to an antique store to put Goodwill prices in context. Yes, I still can’t afford to pay $3 for a tea-cup that I don’t need or want, but it’s still a whole heck of a lot better than $23!

Maybe this week will be better for us.

Special Report: Port Orchard Goodwill from Mrs. PWTR

Mrs. PWTR (Police Wives Talk Radio) reports on her recent trip to the Port Orchard Goodwill. While giving a window into motherhood, she also shares a diamond of hope with a stranger and searches for treasures in the aisles. We are so thankful for her input and skill; she is a true Goodwill Hoarding Girl!

On the Road with Mrs. PWTR:

Midweek I sent a cell phone picture to the ladies at GW Hoarding with a caption “Guess Where I Am?” They are so kind to accept me and my electronic stalking and commenting on GW Hoarding, plus have fueled the fire by welcoming my guest thriftier posts.

My journey to the Port Orchard Goodwill was literally a “third time is the charm” experience.  The previous week I had #1 Son loaded in the car en route to the South Kitsap HS baseball field which is RIGHT BY the Port Orchard GW (cue the heavenly “Ah Ha” sound) when he received a text as we merged onto I5 the game was cancelled.  Drat.

The next week was a hurried trip to Port Orchard with three crabby kids in the car not dealing well with the 92-degree heat.  We arrive in Port Orchard with plenty of time to spare and go to the A&W (https://www.facebook.com/bucksAandW) in the same complex as GW.  We enjoy Buck’s A&W prior to the game and I get rather tearful and homesick for my small town Idaho community. I read a story of how the community banded together to save the A&W when the economy had taken it’s first round of nosedives earlier in the decade.  Tears were quickly re-absorbed in my orbital sockets at the thought of a GW trek (I could see GW from my perch at A&W) after I got #1 son deposited at his game for warm up.

Once we headed back to the field I started to build that pre-GW excitement as to what treasures might await, but noticed there were 2 teams arriving at the field neither of which my son was a part of.  The schedule had been relayed incorrectly to Mom – AKA Taxi Driver who must double as an all knowing sage at all times – and the game was not at South K that day.  Put the car in drive and go home.  No passing Go, no collecting $200 and certainly no trip to GW with 3 even more crabby, hot and frustrated children driven by an even more frustrated mother.  DEEP BREATH.

The next day rolls around and I am cautiously optimistic about getting to the Port Orchard GW.  After obsessively checking the schedule and interrogating #1 Son the entire way about the validity of the schedule we make it.  No need for softsoaping the other two children with ice cream or any other goodies to compromise with Mom for a trip to GW – they were at their baseball practice with their Dad – leaving me….yes…cue that ‘”Ah Ha” angelic chord again, ALONE and FINALLY at GW in Port Orchard.

Port Orchard GW

Port Orchard GW

After snapping my picture and sending it to the GW Hoarding Girls I find my way to the entrance to learn Port Orchard GW is part of the Seattle GW system.  Learn something new every day…(http://www.seattlegoodwill.org/shop/locations/port-orchard)  It was senior 62+ day (Wednesday for Seattle GWs) and no colored tags or Manager’s Special to hunt for, but, considering the challenges I had encountered with making it finally to Port Orchard GW, I was just happy to be there.

The store was buzzing with shoppers and there were quite a few seniors scoping out bargains and taking advantage of discount day.  I was greeted by a very tall and friendly young man at the register and the tone was set for the shopping expedition.  First stop housewares.  Wide aisles, well organized and stocked.  It was at that time I realized my cellphone battery was depleted (#1 Son has a habit of unplugging my phone to charge his…forget he wouldn’t be needing it for 4+ hours…) and I probably wouldn’t be able to snap as many pictures as I wanted to for the GW Hoarding Girls.  No battery issue was going to ruin my time!

Did I find the Hope Diamond?!?

I hope so...

I hope so…

Pyrex Finds

Pyrex Finds

I did find a Pyrex set with a chipped glass lid…  Me being very unsure about vintage Pyrex I knew enough to feel confident that poor set had seen better days and had been put through the dishwasher, which was a no-no.  Is the Pyrex priced too high?  I didn’t know.

Too high?

Too high?

A set of ~pink~ KitchenAid measuring cups and spoons made it to my cart for .99 each.  I had a Barbie Dreamhouse moment thinking of how cute these would look while baking and measuring some goodie in the future.

Barbie Dreamhouse Kitchen

Barbie Dreamhouse Kitchen

Next was to clothing.  Quite a decent selection and, like housewares and the store overall, well organized.  The shoes and handbags too were quite fun.  My camera battery had finally given up the ghost by then, but I was confident my writing skills would build the image for my intended readers.  I then saw *them*.  *Them* being BRAND NWT BLACK HIGH HEEL BOOTS.  Being blessed with calves I was hopeful the boots would fit and they looked as if they were cut just right.  Going into the furniture section and planting myself upon a parsons chair covered in 1980-ish floral print which would have made Molly Ringwald happy, I tried the boots on, and once again, cue that “Ah Ha” chord, THEY FIT!  SCORE!! SCORE!! SCORE!!  Just the perfect boots to round out the outfit I have been waiting for to rock this fall…my Gig Harbor GW CABi dress and Seattle-area GW leather blazer.  I would have worn them around the store–I was so happy to find them–however, they just didn’t complete the look with my shorts and baseball fan attire.  But, then again, I have never not seen anything in a GW fashion-wise that would provoke one patron to question another…after all, we are kindred spirit thrifters and all on the same GW team together–definitely “No ‘I’ in Team” amongst us GW thrifters.

Time for checkout and to head to the game.  Still walking on air from my boot score I make it to the front of the store and notice the lady in front of me had purchased the MOST BEAUTIFUL COVERED CAKE PLATE.  Ok, I know it is getting old, but humor me, cue the “Ah Ha” chord one last time.  I had seen this stand earlier when I was working my way through housewares and appreciated the high quality of it.  Very pretty design etched into it and heavy.  I didn’t pick up the plate to see if I could find an identification or hallmark of some sort, but just “knew” it was a great find!  I had hoped someone would help find this piece its new, forever home, and, lucky me, I got to see that wish come through in the check out lane.  With the store being busy I had the opportunity to complement the lady on her score and she said she was quite excited to find it because she loved baking.  What a stage that covered plate would be to display her baked goods.  Good for her!

Check out and onto my vehicle I found myself again by the covered cake plate lady so carefully loading her treasures in her car.  We exchanged pleasantries again and she returned her cart.  When she came back to her car she stopped and approached me.  Through conversation I learned her name was Teresa and she had just been diagnosed with breast cancer the previous day.  Teresa said to me she was so appreciative I had commented on the piece and reinforced her internal “justification” if the purchase was a good one or not.  We talked for quite some time and it was apparent she was in shock over her diagnosis and the events of the past 24 hours.  Luckily this lady comes from other relatives who are cancer SURVIVORS and luckily she has a job with great benefits and health insurance.  We talked a bit more and that former social worker in me kicked in giving her patient advocacy and system navigation tips.  Who would have thought a Goodwill conversation would have taken this form?  After bidding Teresa goodbye, good luck and a sincere commitment to keep her in my prayers, I drove away quite relieved it was finally that third attempt that landed me at Port Orchard GW. It’s not always about a score on a great pair of boots or finding the right  pair of jeans.  I was able to provide comfort and reassurance to a lady who had just been handed the worst news of her life.  We were able to bond over a cake plate and go instantly to a place where she needed to process and express what was front and center on her mind.

Please keep Teresa in your thoughts and know that kind word, complement or conversation you strike up the next time in the aisles of GW (or anywhere for that matter) may just be that affirmation to another person they have value, they matter and are going to be OK.  Every time I break out those pink KitchenAid mixing cups and spoons I picked up on this visit I will never forget Teresa or any other cancer survivor.  Let’s hope for a cure.  Peace and GOODWILL toward others for sure.  ❤

Respectfully On Behalf of Police Wives Talk Radio,
Mrs. PWTR

Road Trip: North Tacoma Goodwill

We are the Goldilocks’ of Goodwill and the North Tacoma Goodwill proved Juuuuust Riggght!

The 4th and last thrifting stop of the day for us, at the North Tacoma Goodwill we found ourselves teetering on worn out. I know, hard to believe that we could get our fill. But we hang tough! We enjoyed both the 72nd Street Tacoma and the 38th Street Tacoma Goodwills, but were ready to make the last stop after our tour of the new Hosmer South Tacoma Goodwill.

Located a little off the freeway in a strip mall in a slightly older and more affluent area of Tacoma, the merchandise at the North Tacoma Goodwill reflects the neighborhood. The building has the feel of an old Ross Store.
